Animation Jobs in the US

There are a couple ways to go with animation jobs in the US.
Animation Studios in North America
There are animation studios in the US that work with Japanese production studios and that may be a way to be involved in animation and Japan as well. I would suggest contacting DIC and Warner Bros. Animation to start with. These companies also work with studios in Korea, China and other countries so they could provide a chance to see and experience many interesting places.
Another very good source of information is the Animator's Mailing List.
In the past I have been approached by people who have ideas that they wanted to see made as Japanese animation. They said that they felt that animation companies in the US (or wherever) could not do the style they wanted and that they wanted to move to Japan and work there to get it done "right". It would be much easier to try to produce it independently or to get sponsorship in the US than it would be to try and do it through the traditional studio system in Japan. The Japanese animation market is already full of people who want to produce their own ideas and unless the idea that a foreigner has is totally brilliant then they are unlikely to even consider it. (Last I checked, there are enough scripts, story concepts, and such in the filing cabinets at I.G. to last until the year 2850 if they were all produced and many of them hold great promise. Keep in mind that almost every animation company staff member and many fans submit ideas for animation as well. This is not to say that a great idea will not get picked up but that there is a lot of competition out there.)

An excellent Web-based resource guide for finding a job in the US industry is the Entertainment Employment Guide. There are joblines, links, studio websites and all sorts of good information.

Anime & Manga Translation Companies

There are companies like Viz Communications, Central Park Media, AnimEigo, Manga Entertainment, Studio Proteus, Pioneer Entertainment and A.D. Visions that translate and release Japanese animation and manga in the US and other countries. There may be openings at these companies from time to time for skilled people interested in Japanese animation. Note that "skilled" does not just mean "wants to." Anyone wanting to work at one of these companies should have more than a nebulous "I want to work in an anime related job" in mind before contacting them. Although the view from fandom may be that they are "just fans who started companies" this is, in most cases, far from the truth. These companies, like any companies, exist to make a profit and they are not likely to if they hire people who are unable to do a good job without a lot of training.
Interested parties should contact them directly.

Studios in the USA Producing Anime Style Animation

There are a few studios in the US who produce animation that is heavily anime influenced. You may wish to contact them and find out more about what they do.
